The minute a pit bull puppy nips at someone’s ankles, it makes headlines about the pit bull being a dangerous breed. Pit Bull Rescues Little Girl and pit bulls aren’t always the aggressors. Sometimes, they’re the hero. One Florida girl can tell you that her pit bull didn’t attack her, but came to her rescue. Remayah Hernandez, age 5, was attacked by the neighbor’s Labrador while riding her bike. Reports say she tried to pet the dog and it attacked. The Lab bit her in the face. That’s when Trigger, the Hernandez family’s pit bull, came to the rescue. Trigger jumped a fence and fought the Lab to defend Remayah.

Teen says heroic pitbull puppy saved her from would-be rapist

A New York City teen says she owes her life to a heroic pitbull puppy that saved her from an attack by an attempted rapist. Maya Fairweather, 18, told the amazing story to the New York Post, explaining that she took her boyfriend's five-month-old pitbull, Apollo, for a walk in a Brooklyn park Monday night. Fairweather said she let Apollo off the leash so he could play and that she had her earphones in. Then she felt someone tug on her from behind and turned around, thinking it was her boyfriend. Instead, a man pushed her to the ground and began trying to remove her pants. Fairweather said she froze, terrified and closed her eyes because "they say that if you see their face, they will kill you." But Apollo jumped into action. Fairweather said he chomped down on the leg of the attacker, who struggled to free himself and then ran away.

There are plenty of misconceptions and stereotypes about Pit Bulls, and it seems like every other day there is a story in the news about a Pit Bull gone bad. Those stories get plenty of ratings, but they add to the negative press already surrounding Pit Bulls. When raised in a positive environment with lots of love, Pit Bulls can do some amazing things. The Pit Bulls in these stories all went above and beyond to heroically save their owners’ lives when no one else could.

It looked like a “pit bull” — or the range of breeds that roughly fit the term. Then, and for decades before and after, America’s dog was represented by this loosely identifiable melting-pot mutt. It showed up as Petey on “The Little Rascals.” It was the choice companion of presidents as different as Teddy Roosevelt and Jimmy Carter. It provided company to both Gary Cooper and Helen Keller. Theodor Geisel — the real name of Dr. Seuss — who wrote “The Cat in the Hat,” kept a pit bull in the parlor.
